Ranch Style

Over the years, the simplistic ranch style has been given many names:  the American Ranch, the Western Ranch, and the California Rambler to name a few. It has become an American tradition since 1945 when this style first came on the scene. It is believed that the ranch style developed out of the earth-hugging Prairie style originated by Frank Lloyd Wright. The simple lines of the ranch home lent itself to the fast production required as America’s demand for housing escalated during the baby boom years during the 1950’s and 60’s. The ranch style home from this era is sometimes referred to as retro-ranch to distinguish the original ranch homes from more recent construction.

Variations of the Ranch Style

Ranch style homes are traditionally single story. However, you may find split-level and multi-level home styles appear under this category in our MLS. During the 1970’s an adaptation of the ranch appeared called the “Raised Ranch” signifying a ranch home with another floor level.
