“10 Best Beach Destinations” for 2011

Yahoo Travel has named Santa Rosa Beach one of “10 Best Beach Destinations” for 2011. Well, this is something homeowners in Santa Rosa Beach get to experience year round. Santa Rosa Beach offers residents the enjoyment of a long stretch of untouched shoreline along the calm Choctawhatchee Bay waters – and, as Lesley Abravanel stated in Frommer’s Florida, “a cozy, yet quirky, sense of community.” Beach life is just one part of living in Santa Rosa Beach. The community offers shopping, fine dining, many art galleries, nature trails and nearby championship golfing.

In its early days, the area went by the same name as the bayou beside it – Hogtown Bayou. The pioneers who settled the area called it Hogtown Bayou because of the huge number of wild hogs roaming the area’s “piney woods”. In the early 1900′s the name changed. As often happens when development arrives in an area, the old name just didn’t sound like one that would appeal to transplanted Northerners. Charles Cessna, a Chicago-based developer platted the area with new homes and 10-acre tracts – and named it Santa Rosa.
